Official Announcement on Smashing Pumpkins Return Released
After a six-year hiatus which saw frontman Billy Corgan somehow fit a Z and a W consecutively into his new band’s name, release a book of poetry and a solo album,Smashing Pumpkins announced that they were reuniting in early 2006. (Side note: whatever material Courtney Love came out with in the last six years was probably written by Corgan as well. She has it like that.) Now, finally, the band has announced on their Myspace page the name of their new album and its release date.
Zeitgeist it shall be called and July, 7th of this very year it will be made readily available to all those who so wish to purchase it. Which begs another question… July 7th is a Saturday isn’t it? Well yes but um, well, Billy Corgan hasn’t ever shied away from exercising his influence and power now has he? We will just have to wait and see whether this sticks.
The band, which in its new incarnation will consist of Corgan, drummer Jimmy Chamberlain and whoever else Corgan feels like abusing, will be playing various upcoming festivals including Rock Am Ring Festival and the Nova Rock Festival in June (fair warning: these sites are in German or some other language that wasn’t quite decipherable to me).
Now I’d just like to take the time to say that although Corgan, towards the end of the Pumpkins first go-around and also in recent years, has strayed from the formula that made the band so incredibly awesome…instead deciding that prog-rock and experimentalism would be hip and un-trendy…this here writer is damn well pleased that they are back. I will keep my fingers crossed that this time they’re more intent on playing cozier venues like the Metro in Chicago –where they got their start—as opposed to big stadiums that they had become so accustomed to playing at the tail end of the 90s.
