Open Your Musical EyesHow to Create an Unique Musical Identity TodayJul 31, 2007 Brandon Marcel Cherry
This articles makes reference to the common problem artists have with creating a truly reflective image, and tells ways of going about doing so as well.
Many artists often find it hard to think their way beyond what is currently out in the market place when it comes to creating their music, lyrics, and especially their image. This is especially true for independent musicians though. Independent musicians must learn how to create a truly original personality (image), including their musical sound and lyrics in order to really gain the respect of the music industry, and more importantly music fans. This requires that indies open their musical eyes to all of the new possibilities out their for their taking. So often musicians will say that they are originals, pioneering visionaries, and they can’t really be compared to anyone else because of these facts. Though this sounds like the right thing to say, unfortunately, for most indies it is just not true at all. Most people, if not all, entered into the music industry for the dream of becoming a top musical performing act, and to be like a superstar they idolized growing up. This automatically sets an artist up for the "copycat syndrome" that you see in today’s music scene. However, to properly utilize this sort of inspiration, all an aspiring musician must do is pick and choose certain qualities from that person, combine them with some of their own major qualities and wallah, your own image. Sounds really easy, huh? Well it isn’t. Or else everyone would be doing it, right? You’ve gotta do some real soul searching before you can morph yourself from a copycat into an actual original. In fact in the early goings it might actually help you to start by totally attempting to immolate your favorite superstars. This is because by doing so you should quickly become more aware of what is you, and what is not. Also if you are already a performer you’ll have instant feedback from your audience’s response to your music and on stage antics. Don’t just right a certain lyric, produce a certain song, or even dress a certain way in attempt to fit the mold. You as an indie music break the mold in order to get the actual success you are probably searching for. Think through musical history of all of the innovative people (Prince, Madonna, Michael Jackson, Garth Brooks, Toby Keith...), these individuals went against the grain and opened their musical eyes to see beyond what was currently being utilized in their current genres. It wasn’t easy for them all to climb the mountain of originality, but when they did they made a last impression on everyone. They in fact even made history on many levels. So take those blindfolds off and today begin to open your musical eyes to the worlds of original thoughts and possibilities.
