Writing album reviews is a great way to express one's feelings about a particular record, but there are certain rules and regulations to follow.

Writing a strong album review, whether it was loved or hated, gives readers an opportunity to discover great new music, and avoid that which isn't so great. Follow these steps for learning how to write a great music album review.

Listen to the Album More Than Once

While first impressions are important, when it comes to music, there is much to be gained from listening multiple times. Music has many layers, and a deeper understanding can be gained as one listens to a record over and over again. Take notes about what stands out, for either good or bad reasons.

Give Readers Background Information About the Record

Give readers some basic information about the musicians. Where are they from? What are their names? What instruments do they play? While this may not be as important for well-established artists, it’s very important for debut albums.

State An Opinion About the Album

Hook readers right away and give them an opinion. Be firm, and say whether it’s good, bad, or somewhere in between. Try to give it some type of rating (thumbs up or down, star rating, etc.). Back up the opinion with specific examples. Things like song lyrics, musical style, and anything else deemed relevant will help to convince readers to trust the review. Discuss specific tracks and explain why they are good, or not so good.

How Does the Album Fit Into the Band’s Career

When reviewing an album, it can be very useful to compare it to the band’s previous work (if there is any). Readers will want to know if the new album keeps in line with previous records, or if it’s a departure for the group. Try to focus on the music of the past record and how it relates to the current tracks. Try to mention how the album fits into the context of the band’s career. Information about their influences can also be useful.

Be Honest in the Album Review

Readers are looking to the review to decide if they should purchase the album or not. If the album is great, let them know by giving specific reasons and examples. If it’s terrible, do the same. An opinion without the examples to back it up will not be valuable to the reader.

Here are a couple of examples:

When writing an album review, try to inject some personality and style in the writing. Just like with anything else, keep the writing interesting and engaging. If people like the way it is written and the review, they’ll come back time and time again.
