Jul 21, 2009 Ryan Gamble

With the court cases behind him, Chris Brown decided to issue an apology video for his alleged violence against then girlfriend Rihanna.

Chris Brown released an apology video in an effort to try and repair some of the damage that had been done to his public image in recent months. It's not the first time that something like this has been done by a celebrity, but the Chris Brown apology video seems more like a way to clear his name rather than express that he was truly sorry about what took place. That's not to say that he wasn't sorry that it happened, but it will be up to each viewers as to whether they find truth buried within the Chris Brown apology video.

Chris Brown Allegedly Assaults Rihanna

In the early morning hours of Sunday, February 8th, 2009 an altercation occurred between pop singers Chris Brown and Rihanna. The pair had been dating for a short while, and were out on the town before they would both be appearing at the 2009 Grammy Awards on the night of February 8th. It was supposed to be a great day for the couple, but something went wrong in a rented car that the couple was sharing.

There was a lot of mystery surrounding the case right away, and it was alleged that Chris Brown had become mad at Rihanna and "roughed her up." The altercation left Rihanna bruised and battered, and it became a media firestorm when pictures of an injured Rihanna were released through the media web-site TMZ. Chris Brown was arrested for allegedly assaulting Rihanna, and the court of public opinion went into immediate session.

Chris Brown Pleads Guilty to Assault on Rihanna

On June 23rd, 2009, Chris Brown reached a plea deal in his assault case. Under the agreement Chris Brown was sentenced to five years of probation and forced to serve 180 days in community service (1,400 hours) in order to escape jail time. He was also forced to undergo a year-long domestic-violence counseling class, all under the agreement that he would fulfill the sentence and not re-offend during his probation. The charge that Brown plead guilty to was one count of assault with the intent of doing great bodily injury.

The plea deal that Chris Brown agreed to take helped him to escape jail time, and though he has to go through a lot of steps in his probation, he won't have to spend a single hour in jail if he can stay on the right path. According to many news reports at the time of the sentencing, for a first time offender, this is not an oddity, and shouldn't be viewed as special treatment just because he is a celebrity.

The Believability of the Chris Brown Apology Video

With the release of the Chris Brown apology video, many questions bubble back to the surface about the incident between Chris Brown and Rihanna. Regarding the bankability of Chris Brown as a spokesperson, he has really damaged his image, and it could cost him a lot of promotional dollars in the long run. Where he had once had a clean cut image, he is now tarnished because of what he allegedly did to Rihanna. Now he wants the public to know that he is really sorry for what he did, and though he won't clarify in the video exactly what he did, he is apologizing for "everything."

Does the Chris Brown Apology Video Mean Its All Water Under the Bridge?

Taking a step back to look at the Chris Brown apology video, it starts to shed even more light on the way that society and media have become extremely blended in recent years, to the point where an apology video isn't as shocking as it is expected from a celebrity. It is a plea from a music star that wants to put the incident behind him, and presented in the hopes that the public will forgive him. Is he really sorry for what he did? Does it matter if he is even sorry for what he did? Until society stands up and says in one voice that behavior like this isn't going to be tolerated, and the end result is that his music isn't going to be purchased anymore, it would seem like Chris Brown has gotten away with much more than a light sentence.
